Hello visitor, and welcome to the online portfolio of Marije Bijl

I am in Beijing!

After a renovation of my house in order to rent it out that took about 4 months more then anticipated, I could finally jump to the opportunity to live and work in Beijing for four years.
I arrived only two weeks ago and am in the middle of getting my bearings in this giant city, with it's giant buildings, giant towerblocks stretching to the horizon that weren't even there as little as fifteen years ago, tall memento's of a westernized dream in the middle of an asian tempest.
I am looking forward to discover how this will impact on my work, my ideas, my lines.
As it will take some time to discover and digest this new world, to develop a way to incorporate this into my art, I expect there to be little activity on this website for the time being.
Do you wish to know what happens here in Beijing, and what is to be expected art-wise from me, dont hesitate to get in touch with me and I will put you on the mailing list.

The end of last year was a silent time for me artwise, and will be so in the beginning of the new year as well. The good news about it is that the time is used to refurbish my house in order to rent it out, so as to make sure I can remain committed to art, even though the art world itself is slowing down. This is, I believe, both because of the current crisis as well as the currently very nervous art climate in the Netherlands, that still has to adjust to the new rules by the new government.
Some small drawings were made, however, and I have put three of them up on the arts page, as well as an illustration done in a children's book style - a novum for me - for the swiss embassy which can be seen on the illustrations page.

It is always fun to see one's work in printed form:

I will be back in the studio by april, to continue my journey through paint and ink, story and image.

My work was shown at the Galerie Clement in Amsterdam, in september 2010, together with the work of Ben Kruisdijk and Jacquem, in an exhibition curated by Henk Leiting.

My work was displayed at the house of the interior designer Lucas Schelkens,
Korte Prinsengracht 23 in Amsterdam. All that was on show there, the art as well as the furniture, was for sale. An excellent way to see how my work holds up in an interior, as opposed to whitened gallery walls.
Lucas opens his house on saturdays between 11 am and 5 pm, but you can of course also visit him by appointment.

On the evening of the 4th of june 2010 opened the 15th 'Zwervende tentoonstelling' (Wandering exhibit) in Rotterdam, featuring a hundred works by a hundred artists for sale for a hundred euro's, of which the artists will recieve a hundred percent. Amongst these works were be three small drawings of mine, ready to be grabbed up by those who want them.
It was a shortlived exhibition, that took place only till the 6th of june, involved a party, a reception and a good picnic in the park in excellent weather.

Some of my drawings were on show at the first edition of the 'CHIC dessin' art fair at the Atelier Richelieu in Paris from the 26th till the 29th of march 2010. I was represented there by the Galerie D'Ys, who has picked my work to represent both in Brussels as in this Parisian event it is participating in. When viewing my work here, in the virtual world, please remember that contrast and colours are very different in the small digital pictures that were made for internet use only. Should you wish to see them in reality, do not hesitate to call or email me directly for a private viewing at my studio, which is located in the 'Binck' the new cultural hub of The Hague.
